When diagnosed with leukemia in early December, and the possibilities
for recovery and death were discussed, Clair stated, "I win
either way." On February 15th, he won by entering the presence
of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Clairs faith in God
was very deep and steadfast. He considered himself to be insignificant,
but service to the Lord to be paramount. For this reason, he would
not want us to focus here on his background and accomplishments.
We will simply say that those of us who have been profoundly influenced
by his testimony, ministry, and love consider his life to have been
of great significance, and for this we love him immeasurably and
are eternally grateful to God.
He leaves behind his beloved wife, Norma; his son, Jon Austin (his
wife Susan and sons Barak and Javan); his daughter, Cindy Rabedeaux
(her husband Steve, daughters Jennifer and Michelle, and son Bradley);
his brothers, Al Bodtke and Chuck Austin; and sisters, Vera Moore,
Vernetta Dove and Virginia Penfold, as well as a multitude of nieces,
nephews, and friends.
In lieu of flowers, Clair requested that donations be made to his
cherished church, Grace West Church (6820 Ashworth Road, West Des
Moines, 50266), or a ministry to which he devoted much time and
about which he was deeply passionate - Interfaith Hospitality Network
(4114 Allison Avenue, Des Moines 50310). The purpose of this ministry
is to demonstrate Christian love and compassion by assisting homeless
families to find employment and permanent housing.
On Friday, February 17, at 7 p.m. there will be celebration of
Christ, Clairs life in Him, and his going home to be with
Him. It will be held at Valley Evangelical Free Church, 4343 Fuller
Road, West Des Moines. We urge everyone to dress informally and
comfortably - you know Clair would have done so.
